I’m on Outschool

So life has thrown me several curve balls and I’m definitely rolling with the punches. First, I learn the most wonderful news that I’m pregnant! But with this news comes the fact that I don’t want to miss my baby growing up while trying to start a brand new dance studio. Secondly, coronavirus sweeps the nation and everything shuts down. Even now that everything is opening back up, I don’t want to risk my baby’s health, my health and the health of those I love by putting myself in a higher risk situation.

All of this brings me to my online teaching journey.

This spring I began looking into online teaching options. The first option that I found was VIPKid. Of course, I applied. I pass everything fairly quickly, and now I’m stuck with photos and documents in review….just waiting to begin. The second option I found was Outschool. This seemed perfect for me because I can teach dance from home! So of course, I applied!

The application process and the requirements for Outschool are pretty easy and inclusive. You need to be 18 years old or older. You need to live in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom (this is due to the background check requirements). You need to have some experience working with children, and a passion or expertise in the field that you wish to teach. You also need a webcam and a stable internet connection; this makes sense since you are teaching online through Zoom.

To apply you simply go to their website and fill out a short application. This application does ask for a short video either showing your teaching style and your teaching space or teaching an example lesson. I chose to show a little of my personality and my teaching space. I’ve linked my application video here.

The application process is only said to take about 3-5 days turn around time. I believe that due to Covid, more teachers are turning to this platform, so my turn around time was about 2 weeks. Once approved, you submit a background check. When the background check passes you are ready to create your teacher profile and begin creating classes!

Choosing your teaching schedule is up to you, however, Outschool provides you with a chart that shows you the days and times that are most in demand. You also can decide on the cost of your class, however, Outschool also provides a price that they recommend. So there is a lot of freedom in building your brand. Be sure to schedule your class for a few different days and times, to see which time frame is best for your learners. Also, don’t be afraid to create a couple of different classes, to see where learners’ interests lie.

I’m just setting my classes up, so I will have another blog post to let you know all about that process! See you soon!
