Ongoing Course for the Win

Every class creator has experienced it, that questioning feeling of why isn’t this class filling? What adjustments can I make to catch a potential student’s eye? I know the content is good, where did I go wrong?

In my last blog post I talked about changing things up for the new year by reinventing some of my One Time classes that were struggling. I began with Princess Dance and Story Time. This is a One Time Class that begins each class with reading a story, then moves to dance class, and ends with learning a combination to a Princess song. I thought this was a great concept – I mean, most little girls love princesses. So why wasn’t this class popular? After taking a close look at it, here’s what I decided.

  1. The market for a One Time Princess class is pretty saturated. When typing in a quick search on Outschool, I found that the results could basically scroll forever.
  2. I needed a better graphic for my class. The picture I had was nice, but wasn’t as clean or eye catching as it could be.
  3. Ongoing classes are just more popular right now. This type of class is appealing to parents because their learner is set to take multiple classes in this course, however, they can opt out at any time. Ongoing is a series of related classes that can stand independently. So basically, it’s a bunch of related one time classes that parents subscribe to.
  4. Adding more detail to the class description. Not all parents pay close attention to the class description, but for those that do, this is important. My one time class didn’t say what type of princess we were reading or dancing to, but I laid it all out in the ongoing description. That way parents know more about what their child is taking.

So I made the changes. I switched to ongoing format, added a more detailed description, and updated the picture. Not even a week later, my new Ongoing Princess Ballet Class was full!

It was such a wonderful feeling to receive the section full email!

I have at least two other classes that are struggling with enrollment. We’ll see if their makeovers make winners as well.
